Coalhurst Elementary School

May 5, 2010 We are patiently waiting for Buzzer to arrive. We check each day and haven't seen an sign of him yet. It is snowing here today which we are not sure Buzzer will like. In fact even though it is May 5th, it has been snowing all week. Spring has definitely not sprung here in southern Alberta. We will have to think of ways to keep Buzzer safe and and warm.

Buzzer arrived! We were so excited to unpack our new friend. We noticed that Buzzer has two injuries which made us very curious. What happened? We decided we will use bubble wrap to protect this little bee on the next leg of the trip. This journey will require crossing the ocean and travelling all the way to South Wales. We need to check a map so we know where that is!

Tomorrow is the big day. We will be meeting together with the grade 1/2 students who are also hosting Buzzer to create a voicethread for you. We live in a very small town called Coalhurst which is in the province of Alberta in Canada. Here is a map:
Our town has only about 800 people. We are very close to a larger city called Lethbridge. It has about 85 000 people. It only takes 10 minutes to get to the city from our town. We don't have many services here. We have a gas station, a restaurant and a pub. We have no hospital or grocery stores or swimming pools. Most people who live here, work in the city.
Our school has students from preschool to grade six. There are just over 200 students. Some students live in the town but lots come on the bus from the rural areas around us, too. We go to school from September until June. Our school day starts at 8:40 and we are done at 3:15. We have the usual school subjects - language arts (reading and writing), math, social studies, science, health, gym, music and art. Students in grade five and six can also take band.
Here is an article we put in our school newspaper about Buzzer.
A Bee’s Birthday
Students in 1/2SM and 5/6 H at Coalhurst Elementary received an interesting package by Priority Post on May 6, 2010. Inside the box was “Buzzer Bee.” Buzzer is the Mascot of Bower Hill Elementary School in Venetia, Pennsylvania.
Buzzer Bee is 10 years old this year and he represents the Bower Hill School motto a “Great Bee-ginning.” Buzzer is being sent out to schools around the world to bring back information on all the places he visits. The trip around the world is Buzzer’s birthday present.
Students at Coalhurst sent a Voice Thread back to the kids in Pennsylvania telling them about Coalhurst and area.
Buzzer Bee has been to many places in the USA. He stopped in Michigan, New York City, West Virginia, North Carolina, Florida, Louisiana and Texas. Coalhurst Alberta, was his only stop in Canada. One of the more exotic places Buzzer visited was Heredia Costa Rica. Buzzer’s next stop is Victoria Primary School in South Wales, United Kingdom.
Mrs. Naser a grade one teacher at Bower Hill said , “Since we can’t leave Pennsylvania to visit different schools around the globe we used Buzzer to help us learn.” We have learned so much about tons of places in the world thanks to Buzzer Bee.”
